Happy B-Day Finland!

Unknown-1Today is the 95th anniversary of Finnish Independence and our new president Sauli Niinistö and his wife Jenni Haukio have just completed their first Independence Day Ball, which is the biggest social event of the year in Finland. Hard work for the hosts, who have to start out with a 2hr stretch of handshaking as they greet all the dignitaries invited.

For some strange reason I wasn’t on the guest list, but I’m sure they’ll rectify that mistake next year ;-). This year I had to settle for what most Finns do: watch the bash on telly and munch away on gingerbread and drink some glögg which is a traditional spicy Christmas wine. A big part of the fun is also to compare dresses and find your favourite. Will return with pictures of my picks tomorrow.
